Jaffna

Jaffna is one of the most beautiful towns located right on the northern tip of Sri Lanka. Jaffna is known for its predominant Tamil population and recognized as the cultural capital for Tamils in Sri Lanka. Jaffna library, Nallur Kovil, Jaffna Fort, Nainativu, Keerimalai, Dambakolapatuna and Delft Island are among the best places to visit in Jaffna.

Kandy Temple

Kandy’s pride and prestige, the temple of the tooth – Sri Dalada maligawa is the city’s most sacred and vital attraction. Its significance reflects to the legacy of the tooth relic of Lord Buddha being encased in a golden chest.

Anuradhapura

The city, now a World Heritage site, is the capital city of North Central Province, Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sinhala civilization. It was the third capital of the kingdom of Rajarata, following the kingdoms of Tambapanni and Upatissa Nuwara.

Anuradhapura was the centre of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries. The city lies 205 km (127 mi) north of the current capital of Colombo in the North Central Province, on the banks of the historic Malvathu River. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya Rock

Sigiriya, an ancient palace ruins which King Kashyapa selected for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and with an unmatched combination of urban planning, water engineering, horticulture and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes.

The Gardens of the Sigiriya are one of the most important aspects of the site, as it is among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. The gardens are divided into three distinct but linked forms: water gardens, cave and boulder gardens, and terraced gardens.

Polonnaruwa

The second most ancient kingdoms of Sri Lanka’s, Polonnaruwa was built after the fall of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century.

Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned archaeological relic cities in the country, standing testimony to the discipline and greatness of the Kingdom’s first rulers. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Near the ancient city, there is a small town with several hotels (especially for tourists) and some glossy shops, and places to fulfill day-to-day needs. There are government institutions in a newly built area called “new town,” about 6 km away from the town and the main road.

Dambulla Cave Temple

A UNESCO World Heritage site known as the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life.

From the caves there are superb views over the surrounding countryside; Sigiriya is clearly visible some 20km distant.
